Years ago, I was making a 6-figure income each year as a copywriter. I was writing copy for clients. And, I was making my clients lots of money. Millions and millions of dollars!

And, I was doing okay myself; I was comfortable. But deep down, I felt like I could do better.

And one day, a very well-known real estate guru hired me to write a direct mail piece for him to promote his up-coming boot camp. He paid me $10,000 for it. It took me 2 weeks to write the marketing piece. Listen to this:

The letter produced over $250,000 in sales for him in ONE week. I thought, what's wrong with this picture?

He made a quarter of a million dollars and I made $10,000. I am not saying $10,000 is bad money, but it's only a fraction of what he made!

Now I understand, he's well-known and it's his boot camp, and everything. Nevertheless, I was the one wrote the letter and got people registering for the camp.

Then it hit me like a ton of bricks, what does he have that I don't? If I could make my clients rich, why don't I write for me and make myself rich? What if I develop my own products and market my own products?

From that point, I decided to transform myself from a copywriter to a marketer.

I started marketing my own products. I started getting marketing rights to other products; I started copywriting for a flat fee, plus royalties.

And guess what? I was marketing more products. I was getting more clients. And because of my copywriting skills, I doubled my income the next year. And then I doubled it again the year after.

The money was rolling in; everything was great. There's only ONE problem.

I f*** hated it. I was busier than ever. I was getting hundreds of emails, I was getting JV proposals, my phone was ringing constantly, I was writing copy, I was developing products… it was terrible.

I was working my ass off. I was doing everything myself. This is not what I want. This is even worse than I felt as a copywriter.

And then something happened, and it completed changed the way I view business and entrepreneurship and me.

One day I was at my friend's house, and he introduced me to a couple of his friends, and there's this gentleman, my friend told me he's a very successful businessperson. And I always like to hang out with successful people.

So we sat down and we had a few drinks and we talked.

We talked about what we do, the business we're in, family, and things like that. And then he asked me a question, "Dan, so how much money do you make as a marketer?"

I thought that was direct. Understand that, I came to this country with no money, no connection and not a word of the English language on my lips. I had no formal education. I was making about $500,000 a year then. I was pretty proud of myself then.

So I replied, "About half a million bucks!"

I was waiting for his response; I was waiting for him to go, "Oh my god, you're making that much money." You're so smart. You're so intelligent. Man, you're the man!

I was waiting for his compliment; I was waiting for him to stroke my ego.

He didn't say a word. I was waiting and waiting, still didn't say anything. And he said to me something that I'll never forget, he said, "So what are you? Like half a millionaire?"

Boom. On boy… I was hurt. And I got mad. Not at him, but at myself and at the circumstances. I felt hurt because he hit the nail right on the head.

And he said to me, "Why don't you become a millionaire?"

I… I… I… I didn't want to say. But that question stuck with me. Yeah, why don't I become a millionaire? What's stopping me?

Then I explained to him my circumstances, how I was a control freak, how I was running as a one-person show, how I really didn't have a business, I had a frigging job.

I was someone who thought, "If you want something done, you gotta do-it-yourself." I didn't trust anybody.

At the end, he recommended a few leadership and management books for me to read. I read those books and I took massive action. I mean massive action.

I started outsourcing and delegating. I started letting go. I started building a team. I started finding and recruiting competent people to help me.

And a year and half a later, I've become a millionaire.
